After lunch, instead of heading back to work with the team, I head to get my fabric. According to Sol and Brandon, who have executed a similar process when they were here, the fabric selection at the tailor is not stellar, so I head to Great India Place, a very western mall in sector 18, to pick some out. I end up in Gujaston's. I give them some guidelines and they start pulling out bolt after bolt after bolt of fabric. It's a little overwhelming and as a result I think i end up with a conservative choice: a nice plain brown light wool. It's not cheap, but it's not the most expensive either.
I actually do the whole thing pretty quick, but the lunch has run so long that it's almost after 4:30 when i get back to the office. Not a tough afternoon at work, since we left for lunch around 1:30. I do put in another hour in the office and then John and I rush out for Connaught Place (CP - about an hour away) to see the tailor. Traffic is awful and I worry they are going to be closed, but Vinod is very familiar with the location and gets us right to the spot with time to spare. We are using Vedi tailors (of rangoon).
There are actually about 6 places within a block of this on called Vedi tailor, I don't know if they are copycats or what, but this one has the lonely planet recommendation, and sol and Brandon used them and were super satisfied. We go inside and meet Bedi (not vedi- he says "b" as in boston) the owner and he has a guy measure me up pronto. all business. takes all of 3 minutes. I go with a 3 button, 2 slits in the back on the jacket, one pocket, flat front on the pants. Straight Italian. Tailoring runs $75.Then John and I start checking out shirts. Custom made shirts for $19. Pretty awesome. John does a white and a gray. I do the same plus a blue and a pink.
Bedi (pictured left) had mentioned when I called ahead that he had lived in NorthCarolina. Aperantly he went to almost every college in North Carolina (duke,UNC,UNCG and NC A&T) studting economics in '74. Crazy guy.
On the ride home I have a little bit of buyers remorse, as usual. For me it's a whole lotta $$$$. Hoping it turns out ok.
